Summary Areas of Experience and Expertise
Tawia was until the end of December 2014, Director for Legal and Government Relations in Newmont Ghana Gold Limited. In that role, she led the development of strategies for establishing and maintaining positive relations with the Ghanaian government and other relevant stakeholders and was extremely successful in developing and maintaining relationships with the key stakeholders in the company and the industry thus enhancing the company’s working environment in Ghana.
During this period she was also deputy team lead for the renegotiation of the Newmont Investment Agreement with the Government of Ghana. She also successfully spearheaded the creation of the Ghana Business Integrity Forum, which brought together a large number of diverse organizations under the auspices of the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition to collaborate and strengthen corporate anti-corruption policies in Ghana.
In previous roles as Head of their respective Legal Departments, member of the Senior Management teams and Secretary to the Boards of Dehands (Corporate Secretarial and Legal subsidiary of Deloitte and Touche, Ghana), the State Insurance Company Limited (SIC) and Newmont Ghana Gold Limited, she inter alia conducted due diligence; handled the negotiation of contracts; mortgages, sales and purchase agreements; contract negotiations with mining impacted communities, labour and employment issues for these companies.
At Deloitte and Touche, she enhanced the services being handled at Dehands, to offer a one-stop shop to both foreign and local investors, offering the full complement of corporate secretarial services. These comprised of the incorporation of companies and registrations with and procurement of permits from the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, the Ghana Immigration Service, the Free Zones Board and other relevant government authorities.
